Dr. Heary is one of the few
spine surgeons in the United States to have completed formal training
in spine surgery in both Neurological Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Heary has been honored by his peers with selection as one of the
Best Doctors in America for the past 11 years.
Dr. Heary earned his
medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
He completed a residency in Neurological Surgery at the University
of Medicine & Dentistry
of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. Following
residency, Dr. Heary completed a spine fellowship in the Department
of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia,
PA.
A prolific author, Dr. Heary has authored
39 peer-reviewed journal articles, 75 abstracts, and 25 book chapters.
He has been on the faculty of over 160 instructional courses at national
neurosurgery meetings. His major areas of research interest are minimally
invasive spinal surgery, spine and spinal cord injury, spine and spinal
cord tumors, and spinal deformity.
Dr. Heary is board certified
by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He is an active member
of many societies including the American Association of Neurological
Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), AANS/CNS
Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine & Peripheral Nerves,
Cervical Spine Research Society, North American Spine Society, Scoliosis
Research Society, Neurosurgical Society of America, and the Society of
Neurological Surgeons. He has been involved in many committees of these
organizations including serving as the Chairman of the Scientific Program
Committee and the Education Committee for the AANS/CNS Joint Section
on Disorders of the Spine & Peripheral Nerves and he is currently
the Chairman of the Section. In addition, he has served as the Vice-Chairman
of the AANS Public Relations Committee and the Scientific Program Committee
Chairman of the Cervical Spine Research Society. Dr. Heary is on the
editorial boards of Neurosurgery and the Journal of Spinal
Disorders and Techniques.
